Since their inception in 2011, Harakiri For the Sky have been a constant force in the post-black metal scene. The duo, consisting of J. J. (vocals) and M. S. (music), have been releasing albums at regular intervals of two years, and their fourth record Arson will be released on the 16th of February. “You Are the Scars” is the album’s second single, and it holds a world of promise for fans of emotion-charged heavy music.
After the release of first single “Tomb Omnia” in November, Harakiri For the Sky follow up with a second powerful punch to the guts with the 10 minute-long epic “You Are the Scars”. Featuring a modern sound and clear production, this song easily draws the listener into a heartbreaking story of loss. The lyrics carry a distinct hardcore vibe, using the imagery of water to reflect the singer J.J.’s feelings. “But I wasn’t made for shallow waters, my heart is an ocean // And I think that’s where I am right now: Floating, drifting away // Too weak to continue swimming, yet not weak enough to give up and sink.”
Despite the song’s lengthy playing time, “You Are the Scars” does not feel drawn out or tiring, which is mainly due to the careful composition and balanced dynamics. Mid-tempo meanderings are interspersed with lush atmospheric parts and fierce flourishes of blasting drums. The piano in the introduction adds a touch of gothic metal to the mix, while the guitars could be characterised as more traditional melodic death metal. These traits extricate the song from traditional black metal stylings and greatly add to its accessibility.
Arson will be released through Art of Propaganda Records on February 16. The album is available for pre-order through the label’s webshop which offers Arson in different formats, such as a hardbook digipak, a boxset, and vinyl versions.
The band will be embarking on a European tour this month, as well as playing an album release show with fellow Austrian black metal outfit Ellende on February 10, 2018 at Szene in Vienna, Austria.
