Each year, the Post-rock Facebook page polls listeners to get a sense of their favorite releases since the calendar turned. However, this tends to skew heavily in favor of established acts. Thus the presence of a separate poll focusing solely on new artists, to give them their moment to shine as well. As it is likely that some of these bands could factor greatly into the landscape of alternative music in the coming years, it is important to get a hold on the best of the bunch now.
It was an intriguing but ultimately also strange and transitory year for post-rock in 2016. There were some, let’s say, divisive records coming out of the pool of major artists, and there were also some previously lower-tier bands that released huge statement records, staking their claim to a larger piece of the pie. This is an ever-expanding genre of music, and as a result a massive number of new bands threw their hats into the ring as well, with wide-ranging results. It is our attempt with these poll results to help guide you in the direction of the artists that are best prepared to lead post-rock into its next era.
Special thanks go to 10,191 post-rock listeners who took this year’s “Best New Acts” poll. Many of these artists do not receive the kind of coverage we feel they deserve, but because of you we can cover them without the fear of falling on deaf ears, so please never undervalue the role you play in this process.
With that, we invite you to enjoy the 10 Best New Acts of 2016, and encourage you to never stop exploring.
