Summer is coming, and with summer there are music festivals; in recent years they have become an integral part of the holiday. The increasing popularity of “underground” festivals proves that the demand for such events is growing. So here it is, 5 festivals -in chronological order- you shouldn’t miss if you are looking for a memorable experience in the coming months.

INCUBATE is a Dutch festival aiming to connect not only different music genres, but also different disciplines of indie culture like music, visual arts, film, debate and dance. It takes place in Tilburg between 15th and 21st September. Notable line-up highlights include 65daysofstatic, Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra, Goat, This Will Destroy You and God Is An Astronaut. You can check out ticket info and lineup additions here.
WHONEEDSLYRICS is a new festival having its first run this year. It will be held in Bratislava, Slovakia on 18th and 19th September. The line-up includes This Will Destroy You, Tides From Nebula, Lymbyc Systym and Sound Like the End of the World. Whoneedslyrics also organizes a pre-night with Arms and Sleepers and The Ills. I have to admit that this is an impressive line-up for a new festival!
DENOVALI SWINGFEST specializes in promoting “experimental and adventurous music,” as stated on their website. Started in 2007, Denovali is held in Essen, and as of 2013, Denovali events have expanded to London and Berlin. Denovali cannot be described as a single-genre festival. It focuses on widely understood experimental music, from post-rock and drone to jazz and electronica. This makes the festival a perfect occasion to get to know new music, people and views. After all, that’s what festivals are all about!
This year, Denovali will be held in Essen’s beautiful Bauhaus-styled WeststadtHalle between October 2nd and October 5th. That makes four days filled with great music by bands like Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra, Bohren und der Club of Gore, The Samuel Jackson Five, The Haxan Cloak and Demdike Stare. The proper festival with 21 bands in the line-up will be held between the 3rd and 5th October. On 2nd October, Denovali will organize a piano pre-event with two performances. You can read more about the line-up here, and visit here for ticket info.
With all these great festivals coming up, I can’t wait for the summer holidays. But while I am happy about it, my wallet is surely not!
