Today, Arctic Drones brings you the exclusive premiere of “Burst,” a new song by the Glasgow-based instrumental post-rock quartet VASA. The song is off the band’s double A-side single Burst Open, set for release on 29th October 2016.
Last year, Vasa stormed the scene with a whirlwind of an album that lived up to its name in full: colorful, dynamic, an exercise in controlled chaos as entertaining as it was structured. I have no doubt that the Glasgow quartet’s return with the double A-side single “Burst Open” will make a great number of people feel very happy, because Vasa prove to be delightfully consistent in their style.
Here’s what John Niblock – bassist and speaker for the band – has to say about this new release: “Simply put, these tracks are a taster of what’s to come from our next album. The tracks are heavier than anything we’ve written but also a lot poppier and more expressive. It’s a chance to show everyone the constant evolution of our band’s sound.”
The track Burst, which we’re premiering now, definitely agrees with his assessment, especially in terms of expressiveness and accessibility. If Vasa were pretty squarely into math-rock territory on their debut album, it seems “Burst” is here to prove that they can maintain their thrilling dynamic and rhythmic range while also ramping up their already impressive emotional charge. This instrumental track is more eloquent, more energetic… just more of a joy to hear and to converse with.
The track exudes the trademark liveliness Vasa have established as part of their sound, but there are also some new hands helping them out and fleshing out an even more vast sound. Tom Peters (of Alpha Male Tea Party fame) added his axe to the mix, and the results are generous, filled with light and energy. The band credit him enthusiastically through Niblock’s honeyed words:
“Recording with Tom was great, as we are big fans of his band already and loved the production of their last album ‘Droids’. The whole process was very easy and stress-free as obviously Tom is well versed in recording this music and he always kept our feet on the ground. Tom’s really brought out the best in us and we couldn’t be happier with the sound of the tracks, which we can’t thank him enough for.”
The new tracks are set for release on the 29th of October and the band will embark on a few UK tour dates in preparation, culminating with a show in Glasgow on the day of release. Here’s the complete mini-tour schedule:
19th October: Leeds – Belgrave Music Hall
